Typhoon evacuees find shelter at transit quarters


SIXTYFOUR remaining families displaced by Typhoon “Frank” and are temporarily staying at the gymnasium of Jaro district will soon be accommodated in transit housing units at the city’s relocation site in Brgy. San Isidro, Jaro.

Mayor Jerry Treñas said the families will be transferred next week.

Survivors compile flood stories


BEFORE the floors of their houses had dried and their silt-soaked clothes were washed, a group of government employees wrote about their ordeal when floodwaters claimed most parts of Iloilo city and province in the wake of Typhoon “Frank.”

Sixteen stories were retrieved two weeks after widespread flooding caused by an unusual amount of rainfall on June 21 killed more than 300 people and left thousands of others homeless.

Treñas welcomes congressional probe on flood control project


CITY Mayor Jerry Treñas welcomes the resolution filed by Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr. before the House of Representative calling for a congressional inquiry on the P8 billion Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFCP).

Treñas, however, hopes that the congressional inquiry would not cause delay in the completion of the multi-billion flood control project which is set to be completed in 2010.

Iloilo City solon pushes probe on P8B flood control project


ILOILO City Representative Raul Gonzalez Jr. sponsored a resolution before the House of Representatives calling for an inquiry into the more than P8 billion Iloilo Flood Control Project (IFCP).

In the resolution, Gonzalez said the massive earthworks of the still unfinished IFCP may have disturbed the natural terrain and disrupted the customary passageways of rainwater from the Jaro-Pavia flood plains into the Iloilo Strait thereby exacerbating further the inundation in Iloilo City when Typhoon Frank battered the city with heavy rains last June 21, 2008.

Mayor celebrates mud-free Iloilo City by shaving off beard


Having cleared the city of debris left by typhoon Frank, Mayor Jerry Treñas of this city spent almost an hour and two razor blades to shave off over six weeks growth of his beard.

He faced reporters with his freshly shaven face on Monday, having fulfilled his promise that he would not remove his beard until he cleared the city’s streets of all debris and mud.

City Hall assesses disaster risks, measures


THE city government here is identifying measures to reduce risks during disasters and avoid the devastation similar to what Typhoon Frank brought when it ravaged Panay Island a month ago.

Engr. Noel Hechanova, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer, said the initiative will begin by engaging the community in disaster preparations.

Global groups help city rehab


REPRESENTATIVES of the United Nations Habitat, Habitat for Humanity and World Bank met their counterparts here to discuss additional initiatives to support Iloilo City’s rehabilitation efforts. Mayor Jerry Treñas said the International Labor Organization (ILO), together with the UN Habitat, is looking at the possibility of extending funds for the cash for work program.

The World Bank will provide capability building on disaster mitigation and other technical assistance on disaster risk reduction (DRR). “We really would like to train our barangays on mitigating calamities. It is very important this will be done at the barangay level,” Treñas said.

Sona mention brings fame to boy hero


Barely reaching four feet, 13-year-old Rodney Berdin stood tall during the State of the Nation Address (Sona) in Congress on July 28.

Rodney received the loudest applause from the country’s highest officials, next only to the President’s announcement that charges for text messaging have been cut by half.
